Hey, hey, hey! It’s another installment of #MerryMovie2k20. Here are the rules:

  1. I can only watch Christmas movies.
  2. I can only watch Christmas movies that have come out on the same day of viewing.
  3. Only in the case when no films have been released on the day of viewing may I watch a Christmas movie filmed in years past. However, it must be a Christmas movie which I have previously not seen.
  4. On Christmas Eve, I will watch Die Hard.

Let’s jingle some bells!

(WARNING: THIS IS KIND OF A MUSICAL, BUT IT’S NOT A BAD ONE.)

Title of Film: The Mistle-Tones

Rating: TV-PG

Release Date: December 9, 2012

Where to Watch: Disney+, Freeform, Hulu, Sling TV

Synopsis: Caroling gets competitive when an audition doesn’t quite go the Christmas way.

Had I been blessed with the ability to stop time, I would do so just to give more time to this review. Unfortunately, I have not cracked the temporal code just yet, so this is a bit of a fluff piece for a fluff movie.

I actually enjoyed The Mistle-Tones for what it’s worth. Mainly because I had fun and the musical numbers were good. It is a proper Christmas movie that nails the missing holiday ingredient so many of these films lack. Where it makes up in Christmas, it lacks in narrative sustenance. I know that one of these days I am going to watch a movie where it nails plot and Christmas and I am going to be so much happier for it.

Some highlights include fresh takes on Christmas classics, cute actors, fun outfits, and endearing relationships. Some lows include the writing, some of the singing, and a scandalous Christmas party where the boss makes out with an employee. Fun to see in a movie, bad to see anywhere else.

Here are some quick Holly Berries that I wish I could explain further, but my brain is all but spent on my final days of graduate school. Also, my mom and I agreed on every point, which I didn’t realize before writing this review, so here comes another special edition of shared berries.

Harlie’s Holly Berries ft. Kris Ford

  1. Plot: 3/5
  2. Ending: 4/5
  3. Set Design: 3.5/5
  4. Characters/Acting: 3/5
  5. Christmas: 5/5

Overall, 18.5 out of 25 Holly Berries for a Made-For-TV holiday special isn’t so bad. In fact, I think it might rank The Mistle-Tones up there with some of the heavy hitters I’ve watched so far.

One of my favorite lines in this movie is when the lead tells her love interest that he is going to have to work hard for her. And he says, “That’s okay, I’m a workaholic.”

Me too, bud.

Trying to finish up an MBA while reviewing Christmas movies every day definitely requires hard work. But it’s good work and I am happy to do it, especially when I can share it with the people I love. I know not too many get this far into the review, but if you are here, I would just like to thank you. I have quite a few more movies to watch and review, but I am grateful for everyone who is coming along for the sleigh ride.

Happy holidays!
